It appears WestJet flies directly to Palm Springs, however they indicate it is seasonal so I am not sure they will have flights at the end of September. Also WestJet is supposed to be hooking up with Southwest, so that might provide options as well.

Alaska Air

Alaska Air flies direct into Palm Springs. Note, American Airlines does a code share with them but American is always more expensive. Flights fill up fast so book early.

LAX
Cheaper flights are usually available into LAX. Thura and I have done this in the past, but you have to allow 6 hours to make your return flight - 3 hours travel time from Palm Springs to LAX, time to drop off a car and then allow time for traffic problems and security lines.
